Ask Instagram: The Best Non-Toxic Nail Polishes

I’ve gotten my nails done for years. I took a short break while pregnant with Olive, but before and after that I’ve been doing gel, and more recently in the last year, dip. As we move into more natural choices in our home, with our personal care, choosing organic foods, and in so many aspects of our life, there were many times I would be sitting at the nail salon (I’d go faithfully every two weeks), wondering about how dangerous this “stuff” was that I was regularly putting on my hands and toes. I’m all for balance and I’m far from perfect- but lately I’ve been feeling such a pull to clean up my act in all of these other areas I’ve kind of ignored for some time.

The other day I was the gym, which just so happens to be in the same shopping center as my nail spot. I was finishing up my workout and realized I had about 15 minutes to spare, so I hurried over to the nail place and had my girl take off my dip polish. Kind of spontaneous but it felt SO good to not have anything on. Later that weekend we spent a lot of time in the garden, digging in the dirt…and not giving a thought to my manicure was lovely and so, so refreshing.

I asked Instagram- “do you have a favorite non-toxic nail polish?”

And you guys CAME THROUGH! I got 100s of answers, with ONE brand being the most frequently mentioned, and a couple others recommended repeatedly as well.

The first and most popular by far was Palate Polish (see their Instagram here). After doing some research I learned that Palate Polish is a 10-free polish, which means they exclude the toxic chemicals: Toluene, Formaldehyde, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP), Xylene, Ethyl Tosylamide, Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and Parabens. You can read more about it and all the chemicals in detail here. That got me thinking- does that mean the polish I’ve been using HAS all of these scary things. Yikes…

I just ordered the Buttermilk Basecoat, Glaze Topcoat, Lavender Macaron, Cauliflower, Peach, and Cornflower colors. I’m so excited and I’ll absolutely share when I try them.

The three runner-ups were Zoya, which is another 10-free polish, and then Ella + Mila and Ani Michelle. Both of these polishes are 7-free polishes. I’m going to try PP first, then grab some Zoya next. I can’t wait!

Do you use non-toxic polish? What’s your favorite brand? Do you get gel or dip manicures? Are you like me and craving change? Tell me everything in the comments!
