Eat: SoSoBa Flagstaff
We love Flagstaff. It’s one of my favorite places in the world for a few reasons- one, it’s just an hour and a half away but feels like you’re in some magical mountain town in a totally different state. Two, nostalgia is at an all-time high here for me as I went to NAU for both my undergrad and grad degrees. Some of my favorite memories happened in Flagstaff and we continue to make great new ones! And three- the food is awesome and offers a change of pace than what we have in Prescott without going too far.
One of our favorite restaurants in Flagstaff is SoSoBa, a noodle bar. This is a great downtown spot that’s kid-friendly with really great food and drinks. I’ve eaten there at 1pm and I’ve eaten there at 1am- any time I’ve been there it’s been delicious. And hey, there’s one in Phoenix too!
Some of our favorites from the menu (check it out here) are the GenTso wings, which are SO good and pictured below. They have such a nice flavor, a little crispy with the juiciest meat inside. I would definitely start with those, and then also get an order of the Drunken Pork Gyoza if you’re really hungry.
As far as the noodle bowls, you really can’t go wrong with any of them, but my personal favorite is the Tantanmen- Ramen noodles in a spicy tonkotsu pork broth, with ground pork, menma, scallion, bok choy, soft egg, sesame seeds, and itogiri chile threads. It’s kind of spicy but trust me, start with this one if you’re a first-timer. All of the flavors work together in the most wonderful way and I am already looking forward to a snowy winter trip next year to enjoy this hot bowl while it’s freezing outside. Total comfort food. But like I said, you really can’t pick a bad one- we’ve tried almost every bowl and have been pleased with each one, every time. The Mic Drop has been another favorite but I really prefer the ramen noodles over the udon so I’ll typically always order the Tantanmen.
If you’re in a drinking mood SoSoBa also has some amazing specialty cocktails. One of my favorites- the June Rose, made with gin, red raspberry puree, lime juice, and dehydrated rose bud. YUM, right?!
